"The Mighty Ducks" To Take The Ice Again In A New TV Reboot

If you grew up in the 90s, then you couldn't escape The Mighty Ducks mania, whether you liked sports or not.

The first part of the film trilogy debuted in 1992, and told the story of attorney Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), who was sentenced to coach a pee-wee hockey team as part of his community service following a DUI arrest. Thanks to Bombay's experience as a former hockey player, he helped the District 5 team (later named the Ducks) become successful and even secure a spot in the playoffs.

Critically, the movie, which also starred Joss Ackland, Lane Smith, Keenan Thompson and Joshua Jackson, tanked, but the audiences loved it, which prompted Disney to release two sequels: D2 (1994) and D3 (1996).

The franchise also inspired the creation of the Anaheim Ducks NHL team, and the late 90s animated series Mighty Ducks.

It's been a while since anyone talked about the beloved Ducks, and many of the actors have gone on to establish successful careers in Hollywood. But as it turns out, there have been a few people plotting to bring the team back.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Mighty Ducks reboot is in the works and it could soon be coming to a television screen near you.

THR reported that ABC Signature Studios, a Disney-affiliated production company, is in the early stages of developing the Mighty Ducks reboot in the form of a television show.

At this time, it's unclear if the new show will be a continuation of where the last film left off, or if Estevez or any of the Mighty Ducks will reprise their roles in the upcoming project. However, the original trilogy's screenwriter, Steven Brill, and producer Jordan Kernan, have signed on to pen the pilot.

For the sake of nostalgia, it would be nice to see some familiar faces in the upcoming project. In an ideal world, Jackson's Charlie Conway or Elden Henson's Fulton Reed would form their own team of Ducks, and pave their way to success, just like Bombay did for them decades earlier.

Some will argue that the classic should be left alone given all the recent awful reboots of beloved 80s and 90s films and television shows, but the creators can never go wrong with another classic underdog story, after all, it was this type of tale that made the franchise a success in the first place.

We're looking forward to more details about the reboot, and hopefully they won't disappoint.
