The First Look At The New Queen Movie Will Rock You

QueenPhotos

After years of waiting for the movie about Freddie Mercury to actually get made, we finally have our first peek into how it will look!

Originally, Sasha Baron Cohen was supposed to be playing the iconic singer, but after creative differences over the direction of the film he left the project.

We were all very excited when the new cast was announced, with Rami Malek leading the group as Freddie Mercury, Gwilyn Lee as Brian May, Joe Mazzello as Roger Taylor, and John Deacon as Ben Hardy.

The new cast announcement came with a notice on the website that suggested filming would be "starting very, very soon" and turns out they weren't lying! The cast has finally assembled and filming has begun, revealing our very first peek at the look they are going for.

Malek is up for the challenge of playing the legendary character. When speaking about his first hair and makeup tests he said, “When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror, it’s a very affirming moment.”

The film will chronicle the band's entire career, from their beginning in the 70s until the Live Aid performance in 1985 - six years before Mercury's death.

But will the actor be able to look like Freddie Mercury?

Rami Malek has some big shoes to fill if he wants to try and be as convincing as Freddie Mercury. Luckily, he is well aware that he is Under Pressure, and is making sure to give it his all.

Malek knows that he will need to have that indescribable quality that Freddie Mercury had, but says that the look they have been able to achieve "only adds to the level of confidence that one would need to play Freddie Mercury.”

Malek confirms that while he is recording some singing, the movie will also have parts of Mercury's real voice and that a sound-alike will fill in any gaps that the actor can't accomplish. He said, “We’re going to use Freddie as much as possible and use myself as much as possible. I’m in Abbey Road [Studios] right now if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting.”

Here's what Rami Malek looks like as Freddie Mercury

Directer Bryan Singer explains that the film will not be like every other biopic made. He said “It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored. It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration.”

Compared to how Freddie Mercury looked at the Live Aid concert it's pretty accurate!

The photo of Malek as Mercury was released on September 5th, which would have fallen on Freddie Mercury's 71st birthday.
