6 Movies That Caused A Lot Of Trouble When They Were Released

Movies are supposed to entertain you. They are also supposed to elicit an emotional reaction out of you, whether it be: happiness, sadness, fear, joy, anger, contempt or any number of others. That's the great thing about movies and television, you can essentially do whatever you want because you are just telling stories, that is unless you do something that gets the masses up in arms over what you have created.

Some movies are hit the big screen to such controversy that they actually inspired protests. Some were even banned in certain countries because they were deemed to be far violent or obscene to be for mass consumption.

Here are 6 of the most controversial movies of all time.

1. Song of the South

No controversial movie list would be complete without at least one submission by Disney. You may have never seen this movie, but you have for sure heard the song that has engrained itself in pop-culture: Zip a dee doo dah. This movie was deemed to be racist and offensive, as it portrayed African-Americans with heavy stereotypes, specifically with Uncle Remus as a jolly, happy, simple former slave. Disney has never released the film as a home movie.

2. Life of Brian

Monty Python has always been good for some laughs. Their brand of sketch comedy has made them a household name across North America. It is a completely satirical version about the life of Jesus Christ. They frame "Brian of Nazareth" as a normal dude who just happened to be born on Christmas. He is then accidentally named as the coming Messiah, and ends up being the person who is crucified by the Romans. You can imagine why it was deemed so controversial.

3. Last House on the Left (Original)

I saw part of the remake of this movie and I had to turn it off not long after it started. This violent movie filled with scenes depicting violent rape and any number of other vile acts was deemed to be too hardcore for audiences, and I will tell you this, I happen to agree with them. Britain deemed it to be so bad that they ordered all VHS copies in England to be seized by police. One of the actors even stated that he wished that the movie was banned internationally.

4. The Last Temptation of Christ

Creating movies based on the story of the bible, at least in realistic tones, seems to be a good way to earn controversial status, and this movie was no different. The main reason that people were so upset was because it showed Jesus being conflicted about dying for the sins of the world. There is even a dream sequence that shows Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene, having a couple of kids and living a completely normal life. A theater in Paris that was showing the movie was actually set on fire, sending over 10 people to hospital.

5. The Human Centipede 2

The original Human Centipede, though grotesque and more than a little unnerving turned out to be a decent B Horror movie cult classic of sorts. The same can't be said for the second one. It goes way of base of the original, and when you find your movie being too grotesque for public consumption, especially since it's a sequel, you know you have a problem. It was banned in both Britain and Australia.

Netflix

6. The Devils

This movie was loosely based on the life of a Catholic priest who was burned at the stake after being accused of witchcraft in 1600s. People were angry that religious symbols and icons were mixed in with such graphic images, and it forced the studio to actually cut a good chunk of the movie out. So much editing was done that the movie virtually disappeared. There were more than a few protests because of the movie's release, and it forced even more of the movie to be edited out. So much was removed from the original that few people alive have actually seen the whole movie.

Tom Selleck Talks About The "Ghost" On The Set Of 'Three Men And A Baby'

Three Men and a Baby was a classic film for many reasons. We saw Tom Selleck as someone other than Thomas Magnum, we saw Steve Guttenberg outside of the Police Academy world, and we caught Ted Danson away from the Cheers set. The movie won a People's Choice Award for "Best Comedy Motion Picture," and 31 years later it still holds up. Guttenberg was notably absent in Hollywood after the film came out, taking a step away from fame. “You gotta remember, I left home at 17. So I missed a great deal of my own growing up,” he told
