'Police Academy' Star Just Revealed A New Sequel Is Happening 24 Years Later

Warner Bros.

When Police Academy first came out in 1984, people became nothing short of obsessed. The cop comedy turned into a franchise with sex more films following the original.

Starring Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattral, Michael Winslow, and G.W. Bailey, this movie was an instant classic.

The movie came out during a really competitive time, with other iconic films like Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Splash, and Sixteen Candles all coming out around the same time.

Sure, critics weren't the biggest fans of the gross-out humor, but that didn't stop the movie from making nearly $150 million dollars at the box office.

Even though it's already had six sequels, it turns out that they are still willing to head back to the academy.

The rumors of a relaunch first started back in 2010, when Paul Maslansky, producer of the original Police Academy movies, said that it was a possibility.

"It's going to be a new class," Maslansky revealed. "We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

But then eight years went by and still nothing yet...

Now, there's a little glimmer of something out in the horizon, once again reminding us that they have some plans for another sequel.

The news comes from none other than Steve Guttenberg himself too, so you know that it's at least mostly credible. Mahoney would never lead us astray!

On September 1st, he tweeted a photo of himself in front of a telephone booth, and asked fans to guess where he was.

One super excited fan hoped that he was starring in the rumored Police Academy movie.

He's not, at least not at the moment. He actually replied to the fan saying, "the next Police Academy is coming, no details yet, but it is in a gift bag being readied!"

It has been 24 years since the last Police Academy movie came out. Guttenberg made appearances for the first four movies, but tapped out for the rest.

From the sounds of it, he is clearly open to coming back though, so at least if it is a sequel we will have Mahoney with us.

Hopefully G.W. Bailey would come back though, because they just wouldn't be the same without Thaddeus Harris!
