We Finally Have More Details About The New Live Action 'Anastasia' Movie

The Geekiverse

Last year, just in time for the 20th anniversary of Anastasia, it was announced that the movie will be joining the ranks of Beauty and Beast and The Lion King by getting both the Broadway musical and live-action treatments.

The 1997 film tells the story of a long-lost Romanov princess who was separated from her family and became an orphan. She eventually left her orphanage, but had to make a decision about her future - to continue living as "Anya the Orphan" or travel to Paris on a "journey to her past."

Considering that it was one of the best non-Disney animated films of the 90s, we were super excited upon hearing the news of its revival.

At the time, there wasn't a lot of information about the movie, but details about the musical were revealed.

The musical opened on April 24th 2017, and although it was a box office success and even got nominated for two Tony Awards, the reviews were less than stellar.

Although disappointing, we still held out hope that the live-action version will be much better, especially since Disney recently bought 20th century Fox for $52 billion. The recent Disney live-action films have been major hits, so we don't expect anything less from the Anastasia remake.

Now, more information about the movie has emerged, including details about the cast and plot, but we're not sure how to feel.

According to PopSugar, production reportedly began last summer and shooting is underway until April at least. However, there is no premiere date as of yet.

Directed by Blake Harris, the film's plot will shy away from the original a bit. Apparently, in the new story Anastasia, who lives in the year 1917, discovers a portal that leads to the year 1988 while attempting to escape from Vladimir Lenin. The princess then befriends an American girl names Meg.
