'Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind' Deleted Scenes Will Change Your Opinion Of The Entire Movie

IndieWire

In a world littered with mediocre movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has filled a void only a heartwrenching, bittersweet dramedy can.

Known as one of the most remarkable films of the 21st century, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tells the story of two lovers who have erased each other from their memories, only to rediscover their passion for one another.

Soft-spoken Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and eccentric free-spirit Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) play an estranged pair who at the end (spoilers) decide to give their relationship another chance, despite the staggering odds playing against.

However, our perspective on the story could have been vastly different if it hadn't been for a few deleted scenes, featuring Joel's ex-girlfriend, Naomi (Ellen Pompeo).

While referenced several times in the film, Naomi is never seen but did have a reasonably sized role, which had enough power to alter the audience's opinion on Joel and Clementine's relationship.

The deleted scenes contained scenes of Joel and Naomi still living together, a phone call between the pair (right before Joel dials Clementine's number), and a post-breakup hook-up.

When we see Joel's mind is wiped out, he fails to recall why he broke up with Naomi (it was for Clementine).

With these clips, viewers can recognize the guilt in his body language and personal attributes, such as being selfish and impulsive.

However, when the scenes are edited out, you can clearly see why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind articulates the pain felt when you know you can't find happiness with the one you love, but try anyways.

Would you have preferred if the scenes featuring Naomi were kept in the film?
