Dunkaroos: A Blast From The Past You Didn't Know You Needed

On February 3rd, General Mills announced that our childhood dreams have come true: the iconic 90's snack Dunkaroos have returned.

Dunkaroos were an absolute necessity during snack time, and we all had our preferred method when inhaling this treat. Some of us evenly spread out the rainbow frosting on each cookie; others dunked the biscuit into the frosting a bite at a time; the bravest of all simply swallowed the cookie then used your fingers to scoop out the frosting.

Regardless, this snack united our taste buds. Trucks move 71% of the nation's freight by weight and at least half of that load was probably Dunkaroos back then.

And of course, the comeback signifies the perfect opportunity to indulge in other nostalgic favorites. If you feel inspired to throw a 90's-themed get together, or simply just want to enjoy other childhood memories, check out these Dunkaroo companions.

90's Snacks

The sensation of tasting your childhood delicacies is powerful enough to hit you with a wave of nostalgia that can make you long for simpler times. In addition to the frosty, colorfully cookied snack Dunkaroos, check out these other snack additions that are must-haves for any 90s-themed event.

Gushers

Gushers are the ultimate representation of 90s quick snacks. These fruity bipyramids are a chewy fruit snack that hit you with splash of additional sugary juice when you bite into them. While they will never be a delicacy served at a fancy restaurant, a handful will be enough to have you reminiscing about childhood sleepovers and passing out snacks after your soccer games.

Pop Rocks

What could be more wild and carefree than pop rocks? These sweet "rocks" come in a variety of flavors, and tingle in your mouth as they pop and crackle. You can even upgrade your use of pop rocks for 21+ parties by rimming cocktail glasses with this sizzling candy. All you need is a bit of lemon water to gently dab the rim.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce, rainbow sprinkles, and big cherry on top is a classic treat that is sure to bring out the kid in all of your guests. You could choose any another flavor you want, but according to a recent survey conducted by International Ice Cream Association member companies, vanilla remains the most popular flavor among consumers. You can even combine your love for Dunkaroos with this treat by making Dunkaroo milkshakes. All you need is vanilla ice cream, rainbow sprinkles, funfetti icing, and Dunkaroo cookies.

90's Decorations

In addition to nostalgic snacks, decorations will help your guests feel like they have time warped into the past. These can include:

Jazz Styrofoam Cup Design

You may not have known this design had a name, but that turquoise and purple wave that was on every Styrofoam cup is easily recognizable. You can still find the design on more eco-friendly cups, as well as a variety of other things like table cloths, clothes, napkins, and plates.

Troll Dolls

What could be more 90s than troll dolls? Everyone had them, no one knew where they came from, and they were the perfect size to hide anywhere. You can even use them at your event to add a bit of flare to cupcakes, centerpieces, and party favors.

Anything Neon

Bright neon against a high contrast background like black is quintessential 90s. If you don't want your guests to dress in neon, you could have neon cups, plates, napkins, or a neon inspired photo backdrop. You can also enjoy the added perk of troll dolls and the jazz design matching neon colors.

90's Music

90's music was all about free speech. As such, it's no surprise that it was known as the golden era of hip hop. The earlier 90s also enjoyed listening to an alternative rock style. Notable artists every 90's playlist should include are:

  • Nirvana
  • Britney Spears
  • Lil' Kim
  • Snoop Dogg
  • Missy Elliot
  • Beastie Boys
  • Whitney Houston
  • Daft Punk
  • DR Dre
  • Tupac Shakur

Final Thoughts

The revival of Dunkaroos can serve as your pièce de résistance at any 90's-themed event, as it was certainly the most coveted snack item at lunchtime amongst 90's kids. While there isn't an official release date just yet, if GM relied on a consultant, this was a good decision. You can pair them with neon decorations and golden era hip hop music for a party or simply couple them with other snack favorites, like pop rocks, for a quick bite of nostalgia.

Now, new babies can still enjoy the beauty that is a sugary Dunkaroo. Regardless of how you choose to enjoy this decadent frosted cookie, you are sure to experience that same feel-good sensation from all those years ago.
