10 Facts That Will Show You Cyndi Lauper's True Colors

Cyndi Lauper was one of the most iconic artists of the 80s thanks to her many amazing pop songs that we all became completely obsessed with. Whether you were belting out "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or "Time After Time", you absolutely spent a good amount of time listening to her music.

But how much do you know about one of the original pop princesses? She has had an incredible career that has spanned several decades, but there is so much that people don't know about her! Here are 10 interesting facts about the singer we all know and love.

1. Her name is actually Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper

Her friends were the ones who recommended she go by Cyndi when she was younger and it stuck.

2. She's been married for over 20 years

She married actor, David Thornton, in 1991, and together they have one child. Declyn Wallace Thorton was born in 1997.

3. She has won an Emmy

She actually has done a fair bit of acting, including a guest spot on Mad About You, which earned her an Emmy Award in 1995.

4. Little Richard performed the ceremony for her wedding

She asked the singer to perform the wedding. Apparently he tripped getting to the podium and according to Lauper's husband, Wallace, the first thing Little Richard said when everyone giggled was "Shuuurt-up". After the wedding he told Wallace, "Boy, you'd better be good to her..."

5. She composed the music and lyrics for the hit Broadway play "Kinky Boots"

It opened in 2012, and all the music you hear in the production is courtesy of Cyndi Lauper herself. She actually won a Tony Award for 'Best Original Score' in 2013.

6. She was in a new wave band

She formed a new wave band in 1978 with saxophone player, John Turi, that was called Blue Angel. They released an album in 1980, but it never sold well. The band broke up shortly after.

7. She worked as a waitress after the band broke up

She had financial issues after the band broke up and had to work retail jobs and as a waitress, but she was discovered while singing at a local club.

8. Doctors once told her she would never sing again

In 1977 she had to take a year off from singing because of damage done to her vocal cords. The doctors didn't believe she would be able to keep singing but her vocal coach helped her gain back her range.

9. She is an avid activist

Lauper has her own foundation called the True Colors Residence which helps LGBT homeless youth in New York City.

10. She was the first woman to get four hit songs on her debut album

Her debut album featured of many of your favorites, including "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through The Night".
