12 Video Game Characters That Tried, And Failed, To Beat Mario And Sonic
The 90s and early 2000s were absolutely filled with cartoony video game characters thanks to the popularity of characters like Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog. Some, like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, did great! Others, like these 12, have pretty much already been forgotten.
Bubsy Bobcat
A shirted bobcat with a Sonic-like attitude, Bubsy's best known for starring in two mediocre Super Nintendo platformers and one of the worst 3D games ever made for the original PlayStation. For some reason he's getting a revival soon.
Croc
Croc's two PlayStation adventures were actually decent games, but for whatever reason he just wasn't able to last as long as fellow PS1 characters Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.
Rocky Rodent
Possibly one of the most 90s things you'll ever see, Rocky was a rodent with "ATTITUDE, DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!"
Spot
7-Up's official mascot during the 90s, Spot was literally the red dot from the 7-Up logo come to life. He got a few games throughout the decade, none of which were great, before ultimately disappearing with the advertising campaign.
Bug!
Appearing twice on the ill-fated Sega Saturn console, Bug! was a Sonic ripoff that even had the nerve to appear on a console that already had Sonic.

Aero the Acrobat
Aero was a bat who worked for a circus. He got several games throughout the 90s that, while not terrible, ultimately weren't memorable enough to last past the decade.
Zero: The Kamikaze Squirrel
Originally the sidekick of the main boss of Aero The Acrobat, he was given his own game where he fought evil loggers that were destroying his forest. It wasn't very good.
Boogerman
Starring in a game described on the box as "A pick and flick adventure," Boogerman fought enemies with a combination of flicked snot and farts. Funny when we were kids, but not a great game.
Awesome Possum
They literally named a cartoony game character after a slang phrase. Who thought this was a good idea?
Master Higgins (Adventure Island series)
Adventure Island actually ran for quite a few games on the original NES and Super Nintendo and is still loved by many, but ultimately Master Higgins, the franchise's pot-bellied protagonist, hasn't been remembered very well.
Gex
A smart-mouthed gecko voiced by comedian Dana Carvey, Gex actually had three solid games during the early 3D era, but unfortunately disappeared in the early 2000s.
Wild Woody
...I mean, what can I even say about this? Sega actually made this themselves. We have no idea why. Get it away from me!
