'Mad About You' Stars Officially Sign On To A Revival And Reveal What They've Got Planned

We knew it was a possibility that Mad About You would come back, and now it's looking as though it's a lot more likely as both former stars have signed on for a revival.

In the last year alone, we've seen two other huge 90s hits come back and exceed expectations. Will & Grace came back to NBC after a political commercial kind of took over everyone's minds and we realized we wanted more. And of course there is Roseanne as well, which has been killing it in the ratings every episode.

It's honestly only a matter of time before all of our favorite shows find their way back to TV, and now that the stars are actually willing to make it, Mad About You is now in progress.

The show originally ran from 1992-1999 and followed Jamie and Paul Buchman, a young married couple living in New York. They go through a bunch of hilarious and relatable struggles that a lot of us went through ourselves.

The show ran on NBC for its entire run, but there were a few controversies over the years, particularly when it came to how the network wanted the show to run.

It started with debate over the name of the show, with Paul Reiser's manager pushing for it to be called The Paul Reiser Project, but the network wouldn't allow it. Luckily, co-star Richard Kind came across the phrase Mad About You and ran in to pitch it.

"One day I pull into a parking space, and I see a thing that says Mad About You," Kind recalled. "And I go, 'Oh, my God! That’s a great name!' And I run in and I go 'Guys! Guys! I’ve got it! I’ve got the name: Mad About You!' And they go 'Yes. That is the name of the show.'"

The second issue came from the actual plot of the show. The creators had intended the show to end with the couple having a baby, but the network insisted that they bring a baby in for the final season. Paul and Jamie have their daughter and then the show spends the next season showing how they handle life as new parents.

The show ended with a flash forward to 22 years in the future, but the new season of the show is expected to take a different approach...

While the stars have officially been signed on, the original network has not. While NBC has been the go-to network for reboots and revivals in the last year, there is no official word as to whether or not they will be home to a new season of Mad About You.

The original ending of the show with the jump to 22 years was actually designed to prevent this from happening. According to Reiser, he was actually against the thought of ever doing a reunion.

“Our thinking at the time was, ‘Let’s make sure we never get tempted to come back — let’s tell them what happens,'" he said.

But now, he realized that there were still interesting stories to tell. “If we can find the story to tell, and anybody’s interested, I’d be open to it,” he told People. “To me, it’s interesting when I see my kids are growing and leaving the house. It’s like, ‘Oh.’ It’s like that moment when you get married. It’s like we’re in a new world that we don’t know the rules of.”

And that's exactly what they plan on exploring.

The new show will be set when their daughter Mabel is 17 years old, and leaving the house to go to college. Because the show ended with their daughter 22, it's likely that they will just ignore the finale as it was and just make a new story.

They haven't revealed whether or not any of the other cast members have signed on to return, but Helen Hunt has revealed a little bit about what she wants for the show...

Hunt's portrayal of Jamie always felt very honest and real. It almost didn't feel like a character, it felt like we were just actually seeing their relationship. The chemistry between Reiser and Hunt made the show what it was, and it's no surprise that it wasn't a total act.

"I have remained very, very close friends with Paul," Hunt revealed. "Reboot, or no reboot we have lunch once a month. We really enjoy and care for each other."

While on Ellen Degeneres's show, she was discussing whether or not she knew if it was happening or not. "It's not for sure yet," she said. "I will say that Paul Reiser is in my kitchen a good amount because we're talking about how to make it and not wreck it, because we're proud of what we did."

But even though they are worried about "wrecking" it, she still wants to reprise her role. "I hope so. It would be fun," Hunt said about the potential reunion.

As for what she thinks should happen, she has been opening up about her thoughts. "It does seem compelling to visit these characters 20 years into a marriage after raising an entire human being. So depending on some pieces falling into place, it could happen."

"I just want [my character] to continue to reflect the highly imperfect nature of everybody around me. People that watch the show never say, 'We love how perfect you are with each other!' They say, 'We love how you're falling apart,'" she said. "I don't imagine these characters have gotten more perfect in 20 years."

“The dream is to get to do it,” Hunt said, before citing the other popular reboot as inspiration. “I’ve been watching “Will & Grace” and laughing so hard out loud, they’re just crushing it."

"We really enjoy and care for each other. It was a very loving piece of work," Hunt said. "We loved it. It would be fun to work on something that’s really about love. We’ll be older though — I hope people are prepared for that. I’m not prepared for it!”
