David Spade Opens Up About Chris Farley, And Explains Why He Didn't Attend His Funeral

Jeff Kravitz / FilmMagic

David Spade and Chris Farley were one of the most iconic pairs to have ever have been on Saturday Night Live. Their dynamic always had everyone in stitches, and you could really tell they were best friends off camera.

Farley's death in 1997 surprised everyone. He was in his prime, but a drug overdose took his life, leaving behind his family and friends.

In the years leading up to his death, Farley was suspended from SNL because of his additions several times, but he would always come back. His last appearance on SNL was on October 25th, 1997, and people were concerned by how he looked.

He struggled with addiction and obesity for most of his life, seeking treatment more than 15 times. His body was discovered by his younger brother on December 18th, 1997, and the autopsy revealed that it was a cocktail of cocaine and morphine that ended up taking his life.

As expected, his friends and family were heartbroken, but it was his best friend's actions that had a lot of people spreading rumors. While many of Farley's castmates and friends were seen at his funeral, Spade was not there.

A lot of people had thoughts on why he chose to miss his best friend's funeral, but it wasn't until 2015 that he addressed the rumors about his absence.

He was doing an "Ask Me Anything" on Reddit, when he finally decided to open up a bit about his friendship with Farley, and why he had chose to stay away from the funeral.

Spade was asked about his friend Chris Farley quite a bit in the AMA, and shared some stories that people hadn't heard before. When he was asked about the "fat guy in a little coat" scene from Tommy Boy, we found out there was so much more to that than we knew.

...I would have to write my sketches to try to get on but they would always let him on, so [Chris] would get behind me and be bored, everyone would write him sketches, and he would say "Davey… turn around" and I said "if this is Fat Guy in a Little Coat I'm not turning around, it's not funny anymore." And he would say, "no, I've got a whole new thing I'm doing."

And then I'd turn around, and it would be him in my Levi jacket, and he would say, "Fat guy in little coat! Don't you give up on it!"

And so when we did Tommy Boy, we were just looking for jokes and scenes to make them better, and we decided that was funny to us, maybe it would be funny to there people.

Spade also revealed the truth about why he wasn't at the funeral

Wow. Well, I have to say, I think about him all the time. We had such a good time for so long, and we were crammed together for so long, that we did have our squabbles, but I think people misunderstood me not going to that funeral, it was nothing about that it was just too… emotional, and I wouldn't be able to handle it.

Just because he didn't go to the funeral doesn't mean that they weren't friends. It's actually really heartbreaking to hear the truth. He still has a lot of love for his best friend too.

Paramount Pictures

But I still hear songs, of all things, I know it sounds stupid, but there are songs that I hear, and they remind me of him. And just different situations.

And I see his brother Kevin a lot, and he reminds me of him, and makes me laugh, because the whole family has the same mannerisms in some ways. But overall, just good thoughts...

Even though his best friend has been gone for over 20 years, Spade will never forget Chris Farley, and honestly, I don't think any of us will.
