Clueless Is Getting A Remake And All We Can Say Is "As If"

Paramount Pictures

So, remakes are everywhere, they are inescapable. Every time you turn around there's another one in the works, and while it's exhausting, there's not a whole lot we can do to stop it.

But sometimes they go too far.

The newest remake to get the green light is one that we never expected. One that could not possibly be improved. One that is too glorious to even pretend like there is any room for improvement.

This time, the newest classic that Hollywood has decided to remake is none other than the iconic teen comedy Clueless. AS IF.

I know what you're thinking, and don't worry, I'm right there with you. Usually I try to give remakes the benefit of the doubt, but in this case, I don't understand why it needs to be done.

Clueless was a perfect movie. Alicia Silverstone created a character that managed to give us a different type of hero. She was extremely feminine, and while that's usually not usually how Hollywood defines the hero of the movie, Cher Horowitz remained true to herself and taught us ladies a lot.

She stands up for herself against the "hot guy" in school, telling him she's not interested, she's got high standards for herself, refusing to settle for just any boy, and she managed to convince all of her teachers to give her better marks so that's really impressive.

The cast in general was absolutely perfect. With Paul Rudd making everyone fall in love with him as the dorky and kind Josh, Stacey Dash as the honest best friend, Brittany Murphy as the fish-out-of-water new girl, and of course Breckin Meyer as the lovable stoner, there were so many excellent characters.

It's the quintessential high school movie, and remaking it is something that is pretty unexpected, especially because they already tried this shortly after the movie came out.

Who else remembers the Clueless TV show, because I sure do. Honestly, I actually enjoyed it. It had a lot of the same actors from the movie, with the most notable absence being Cher herself. Silverstone didn't want to be in the TV show so instead she was replaced with Rachel Blanchard who was good enough.

But here's the thing, while that one was okay, it took place in and around the same time period as the original. It's been 23 years since Clueless came out, and the world is not the same at all.

Paramount Pictures is remaking the movie, with Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) on board to produce, and Marquita Robinson (Glow) set to write the script.

But there is no word yet if it'll still be set in the 90s or if they will try to bring the comedy into modern times, but if so that means all those 90s slang terms we learned from Cher and friends will be gone.

There is a Clueless musical in development as well, with the debut performance scheduled for next month, but that one isn't a complete re-imagining.

Maybe it's unfair that we're all getting so upset over a remake before it's even written, but it's one of the few cases where I don't see the point. There's no way to update it, there's no reason that modern teens couldn't watch and enjoy it, and it's not like there's a shortage of new teen comedies anyways.
