Candice Bergen Reveals The Truth About Her Date With Donald Trump
Candice Bergen has been a star for decades now. Her show Murphy Brown is starting back up, after several years off the air, and that means we once again get to hear from Bergen herself.
The 72-year-old actress has had a long career, and while most of us remember her as the title character of her hit sitcom, she has led quite the life and isn't afraid to share some details about it with her fans.
Bergen went on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and they discussed everything from how the television landscape has changed, to her date with Donald Trump. That's right, Murphy Brown herself went on a date with the current president of America.
Interestingly enough, they've written this date into the show, so it makes an appearance in the first episode, but Bergen told the real story to Colbert.
"I was very young," Bergen explained. "I was about 18, and Trump and I, we're about the same age, or as he would point out I am about six months older. It was when I at Penn [University of Pennsylvania] and I remember that it was, I might have invented this because it's so perfect, but I think he was wearing a burgundy suit with a burgundy vest and burgundy patent leather boots, and was in a burgundy limousine."
"It was kind of a symphony of burgundy," Bergen joked before revealing the date did not go great.
"I was home very early," she admitted.
"He was not a student at Penn, yet" Bergen said. "He was not Donald Trump then," she started. "He was Donald Trump, but he was just kind of, you know, a guy."
But as for how that met and set up that first date, she can't totally remember.
"I think he must have called me, I don't remember really." To which Colbert joked that "He'd be so insulted to hear that."
Obviously, it would be a long time before Trump would get into politics, but he's not the only politician she dated. Bergen also went out with Henry Kissinger.
"That one came about because friends of my parents had a very small dinner for Frank Sinatra and his date, and Henry Kissinger and I was his date because they were friends of my parents."
Although it sounds like this date didn't get off to the best start either.
"He was late picking me up because the secret service couldn't find Beverly Hills."
"But Kissinger, you know, was of course, highly intelligent, very charming, and the dinner was just sort of like a mano-a-mano between Kissinger and Sinatra. It's like 'I'm the most popular,' and 'no, no, but I'm Frank.' And that's what it was and then I was home."
Between the two, she admitted that Kissinger was the better date.
As for the premiere of the show, she's excited to bring back Murphy Brown, especially during the current political climate.
"We wouldn't have come back if the election had gone differently," Bergen revealed.
But a lot has changed since the last time we saw Murphy on the news.
"There was no social media, and people still had respect for the press. They weren't the enemy of the people. So that's a big change. We're trying to restore the respect for the press."
The other big change is that now they will be running a morning show instead of a news program, but that doesn't mean she isn't going to be making some big moves.
Colbert revealed that in the very first episode Murphy gets into a Twitter war with Trump.
"We wasted no time," Bergen jokes.
The show has always been politically charged, and it seems like they aren't going to shy away from any potentially controversial topics just because the show is making a comeback.
Murphy Brown returns Thursday, September 27th at 9:30 pm on CBS.
