I think we can all agree that Hocus Pocus is one of the greatest Halloween movies ever. Sure, there are a bunch of spooky movies you could watch, but none will ever be able to hold a candle to this classic.
It has remained a top pick by basically all 90s kids since it came out. So while we all pretend that the upcoming TV movie isn't happening, we should probably learn more about how this amazing movie was made.
The producer of the movie came up with the idea for his daughters
It was a bedtime story he told his kids, but then realized that millions of kids would love it just as much as they did.
Leonardo DiCaprio could have been Max
He says that he was offered "more money that [he] ever dreamed of" but he turned it down in favor of starring in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He doesn't regret it though. He said, "I don't know where the hell I got the nerve. You live in an environment where you're influenced by people telling you to make a lot of money and strike while the iron's hot. But if there's one thing I'm very proud of, it's being a young man who was sticking to my guns."
Mary Sanderson (Kath Najimy's character) was almost played by Rosie O'Donnell
She was offered the role but turned it down because she didn't like the fact that the witches ate children.
They had a choreographer for the broom/vaccum scene
Choreographer Peggy Holmes actually rode around in their cars with them to use that to influence the way they flew their brooms/vacuum.
Billy was supposed to call Winifred a "bitch"
Doug Jones, the actor who played Billy thought it was too much so he went with "wench" instead.
But more importantly, what about the moths?
Those were real moths in his mouth
They used real moths in that scene, but just put a barrier so the bugs wouldn't go into his throat.
There were nine cats to play Thackery Binx
He was voiced by Jason Marsden who actually also voiced Max in The Goofy Movie, but each cat had a different skill depending on what they needed.
Even though Jason Marsden voices Thackery Binx, he isn't the human version
That is played by Sean Murray. He was supposed to be the original voice of the cat, but they thought it should sound like a more old fashioned voice. Marsden had to dub over all of Murray's lines so the cat's voice would be the same as the boy.
Sarah Jessica Parker's real life ancestors were witches
Or at least they were accused of being. She was on the should Who Do You Think You Are? in 2004 and found out her 10th great-grandmother was arrested in Salem for committing "sundry acts of witchcraft". She was never convicted but it's a crazy connection to her past!
Bette Midler says that Winifred Sanderson is her favorite character she has ever played
Because obviously who else would she pick?!
