Netflix Is Bringing All Of Your Favorite Roald Dahl Stories Back In A New Animated Series

Amazon / Paramount Pictures

There are a few iconic storytellers we can all agree influenced our childhoods, and Roald Dahl is basically guaranteed to make everyone's list.

His classic stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and James and the Giant Peach have been loved by children for decades.

It doesn't matter if you're reading the book or watching one of the many movies based on one of his novels, because Dahl's ability to create these magical little worlds manages to transcend format and remain enjoyable no matter what.

Dahl's characters are nothing short of iconic. Whether it's the six-year-old Matilda who has powers that we've all been jealous of for decades, or the whimsical Willy Wonka whose chocolate factory was beyond our wildest dreams, there are so many characters that could be revisited.

I know we've been burned by remakes before, but let's have some hope. Paramount Pictures

I know what you're thinking, a reboot isn't an original idea, but we're in a world where it's bound to happen so at least this time the option is intriguing.

Netlifx has just signed a deal that will allow them to create an animated series based on Dahl's books.

The preview shows a Wonka bar, and as it unravels you see there is a golden ticket inside. The ticket has the book titles Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda, and The Twits listed, along with an added note that says "and many more."

Netlfix has partnered with the Roald Dahl Story Company to produce the new series, and in their press release they state that they "intend to remain faithful to the quintessesntial spirit and tone of Dahl."

However, it won't be just a straight adaption of the books, instead they are making an entire "story universe" that will apparently extend beyond the stories we already know with potential for the different stories to overlap.

The VP of kids & family content at Netflix also revealed the plan for the series. “We want to do the animation in the style of Dahl," she said before continuing to explain how excited they all are.

If you need to catch up on all of his stories, you can pick up this collection on Amazon. Amazon

"Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honor and a massive amount of fun, and we are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world. We have great creative ambition to reimagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values."

Dahl's Widow, Felicity, released a statement to discuss the new project she has signed on for, knowing her husband would have approved.

“Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories. This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”

The series will begin production next year so hopefully we won't have to wait too long before we get to see more! If you want to revisit all of the stories yourself, or you know someone who should read them, you can get a whole set of them here for only $40.
