For Better Or Worse, The Newest 'Leprechaun' Sequel Will Change The Whole Franchise
As every movie from our childhoods comes back in what we may as well call "the decade of reboots," we are starting to run out of the obvious choices. All of the Disney movies are getting done, Mary Poppins is coming back, and even Halloween got a franchise-changing sequel.
The interesting thing about the sequel to Halloween was that it completely erased all the follow-ups that had been made in the years since the first movie came out. Instead of going back into the lore to explain how the character kept dying again and again, they just ignored it all and made it a direct follow up to the first one.
Well, it seems as though another 90s horror movie is going to try to pull off the same thing. Leprechaun came out back in 1993, and while it has had six different follow-up films, the newest movie in their collection is supposed to act as a direct sequel to the first one.
The evil Leprechaun will be back, raised from the well that the first movie left him in. The movie's description seems to reflect the speculation that they will be reversing all of the plots laid out in the sequels.
“The deadly, wisecracking Leprechaun is back in all his gory glory. When the sorority sisters of the Alpha Upsilon house decide to go green and use an old well as their water source, they unwittingly awaken a pint-sized, green-clad monster. The Leprechaun wants a pot of gold buried near the sorority house, but first, he must recover his powers with a killing spree—and only the girls of AU can stop him.“
What this rewrite of Leprechaun history means is that some of the other original characters will be returning as well, most importantly, Ozzie is back with Mark Holton once again playing the role.
However, one person who is not returning is Warwick Davis. While he played the original Leprechaun, the character will now be played by Linden Porco.
The film will take place 25 years after the original, so I guess the Leprechaun spent a good, long time down in that well. Do you think he had time to think about what he had done?
The movie isn't getting the same theatrical release that the other big remakes are, instead it will be available digitally and on demand on December 11th, 2018.
It seems like they probably should have gone for a Halloween release or maybe a St. Patrick's Day theme, but I guess it'll be the movie you can watch while on Christmas vacation! Nothing says the holiday season like a demonic little leprechaun, right?
