15 Important Details Many People Missed While Watching The Royal Wedding

Reader's Digest

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially tied the knot and been blessed by the Queen as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

According to Nielson data, approximately 30 million people tuned in to watch the royal wedding and the beloved couple became the most trending topic on social media on their special day.

That's a lot of eyes watching the latest royal ceremony, but not everyone noticed these 15 important details.

Let us know if you did!

1. The vacant seat

The wedding ceremony at Windsor Castle was packed, but there was one seat left empty. Did you notice where that was?

If you were looking close enough you may have noticed that the seat next to Prince William was vacant.

Some people thought it was a tribute to Princess Diana, but according to People it was for a different reason.

It's believed that Queen Elizabeth requested to have that particular seat empty so that she could have a clear view of the ceremony.

2. Harry mouthed the most romantic thing at the altar

Right when Meghan was greeted by her fiance at the altar, the dashing Prince said something that melted our hearts.

Harry turned to his soon-to-be bride and said, "You look amazing," then he paused, bit his lip, and continued, "I'm so lucky."

While you were busy trying to figure out what he said, you probably didn't think too much about the moment he bit his lower lip.

If you're a huge fan of Princess Diana, you may have noticed that she had a habit of biting her lip too.

According to human behavioral expert Susan Constantine, Harry and his mother have a lot in common.

"In this deeply personal moment Harry is trying to conceal his emotions ... Oftentimes, expressions like this may appear as sadness but in fact, it's just that he's really overwhelmed and trying his best to keep his composure," she told Good Housekeeping.

3. Their licence plate

When Meghan and Harry left for the second reception, they hopped in a silver-blue 1968 Jaguar convertible.

While we were admiring the newlyweds, we missed an important detail: the license plate!

The plate read "E190518," which is short for May 19, 2018.

4. The blue ring

If you happened to take notice of licence plate on the getaway car, then may have missed the emerald-cut aquamarine ring on Meghan's right hand.

Harry gave Meghan this piece of jewelry that belonged to his late mother.

Princess Diana was photographed several times in the '90s sporting this ring on her left hand.

5. The Queen's lime green outfit

I don't think anyone's outfit at the royal wedding was anything shy of perfect, especially Queen Elizabeth's.

Most people were wearing black or some other neutral color, but the Queen wore a bright lime green coat over a purple dress, and matched the ensemble with a lime green hat.

The Queen has always stayed true to her signature style of wearing bright colors. Apparently she does this to stand out in crowds, and it worked!

If you're wondering why she chose green and not another bright color, it may have to do with the symbolism of that particular color.

According to psychologists, green is a color of growth and rebirth, and is likely a sign that the Queen approves of her grandson's marriage.

6. Where was Meghan's maid of honor?

Kate Middleton's sister, Pippa, became famous when she became the maid of honor at Prince William's royal wedding in 2011.

British weddings don't usually have maid of honors, but we thought that since Meghan is American she would have one.

It was even reported a few months back that a good friend of hers would be by her side.

We did see Prince Harry's best man, his brother William, but we didn't see a maid of honor.

Apparently, Meghan didn't want to choose a favorite among her close-knit group of friends.

That's so sweet of her!

7. The royal kiss

This wedding was just like a fairy tale.

If you've watched your fair share of royal weddings, every romantic balcony kiss is entrenched in your memory.

This tradition was set by Princess Diana and Prince Charles at their wedding.

Harry and Meghan decided to share their intimate moment on the steps outside St. George's Chapel.

8. The bishop's iPad

Bishop Michael Bruce Curry's heartfelt sermon at the royal wedding was praised all around the world.

He made history on that day when he became the first American to be invited to speak at a British royal wedding.

And he also broke royal protocol by using a tablet to deliver his speech.

9. Their wedding photos

There were times during the royal wedding that I felt like I was watching close friends tie the knot at some fancy chapel.

They way the couple looked at each other and embraced wasn't anything like your typical royal wedding.

Even the wedding pictures of the bride and groom were very relaxed, which heavily contrasted to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding photos.

Harry and Meghan have broken quite a number of royal traditions ever since they met, and while this one is not a big deal, it's important to take note of.

The reason why William and Kate's wedding pictures look so official is because it's likely that they will become the future King and Queen of Britain. It makes sense now, right?

10. The bouquet honored someone very important

The gorgeous white bouquet were Forget-Me-Nots, which were Princess Diana's favorite flower.

"The couple specifically chose them to be included in Ms. Markle’s bouquet to honour the memory of the late Princess on this special day," the Kensington Palace stated.

The flowers were later gifted to hospice patients in London.

"Today we got a very special delivery. Beautiful bouquets made from the #royalwedding flowers which we gave to our patients. A big thank you to Harry and Meghan and florist Philippa Craddock. Our hospice smells and looks gorgeous. Such a lovely gesture," St. Joseph's Hospice wrote on their Facebook page.

This is such a beautiful way to pay tribute to one of the most beloved princesses.

11. The Archbishop of Canterbury said the wrong names?

I thought I was going crazy when I heard the Archbishop refer to Prince Harry as "Henry Charles Albert David" and Meghan as "Rachel Markle."

I thought it had to be a mix-up, because later on in the ceremony the Archbishop went back to calling them the names that we're all familiar with:

"No one should enter into it lightly or selfishly but reverently and responsibly in the sight of almighty God. Harry and Meghan are now to enter this way of life..."

Unbeknownst to some, Meghan's formal moniker is Rachel, just like the name of her Suits character, and Prince Harry's given name is actually Henry.

12. Meghan's veil

While most of us were focused on Prince Harry's struggle with pulling Meghan's veil back in the ceremony, others paid close attention to the embroidered floral pattern.

Each flower represents one of the 53 countries in the Commonwealth.

According to Kensington Palace, Meghan wanted to have all of the U.K. Commonwealth countries stitched onto her veil.

"The workers spent hundreds of hours meticulously sewing and washing their hands 30 thirty minutes to keep the tulle and threads pristine."

Meghan also added her own special touch to the veil.

She asked for the California poppy, her home state's official flower, and the Wintersweet flower, which grows in front of Nottingham Cottage, to be stitched on her veil as well.

13. And her tiara

The Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara, which belongs to Queen Elizabeth II's grandmother, was lent to Meghan to wear down the aisle.

According to the Kensington Palace, the brooch dates back to 1893 and was inherited by the Queen in 1953.

Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle chose to wear a tiara with a diamond stone, while some royals opted for a sapphire as the center stone.

14. The A-list celebs

There were a lot of familiar faces at the ceremony, and it's likely that you missed most of them.

Some people were hoping to see the Obamas or Donald Trump and his family in attendance, but the royal couple wanted to keep politics away from their special day.

Some famous faces that did appear were George and Amal Clooney, James Corden, Oprah, Idris Elba, Serena Williams, Victoria and David Beckham, Elton John, Abigail Spencer, and Priyanka Chopra.

15. "The bride will be joined by her ... father?"

Another way the royal wedding made history was when Meghan walked down the aisle only accompanied by page boys and flower girls.

Despite having announced a week before her wedding that her father won't attend the ceremony due to his poor health, we didn't think she'd walk alone.

Fortunately, Prince Charles stepped to the occasion and met Meghan halfway to the altar.
