Brigitte Nielsen Announces Pregnancy At 54, Discusses Addiction And Rehab

Hello! Magazine / Instagram

While most people at the age of 54 start to look into retirement, actress Brigitte Nielsen is preparing yet again for motherhood.

Earlier this week Nielson took to Instagram to announce she and her husband Mattias Desi, 39, are expecting a little bundle of joy in the upcoming months, with the caption: "happy time ❤️ positive vibes #happyness #positivevibes."

The Rocky IV star, who's been married five times, has four other sons, Raoul Meyer Jr., 23, Douglas Meyer, 25, Killian Gastineau, 28, and Julian Winding, 34, from previous relationships, but this will be her first child with Desi.

She tied the knot with Desi in 2006, and has been vocal about starting a family with him ever since.

"After I do Playboy, we want to try IVF. It’s asking a lot, but if it’s possible, it would make our package complete," Nielsen told Hello! Magazine back in 2008.

This is exciting news for the actress and model who has turned her life around following her years-long alcohol addiction and ensuing rehab stay, when she appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2008.

She revealed it was her family and friends that gave her the push to seek treatment.

"It has to do with your family. It has to do with business. It was to do with your friends, who are honest with you." Nielsen explained. "So you know maybe it’s time to change – and that’s exactly what I did. I cannot thank God more."

"I’ve been a bad mum at times – when you take the bottle over your kids, you’re a bad mum. But I love them and there has always been a close bond," Nielsen said.

"I’ve been affectionate, caring. It’s unfortunate they’ve seen me in a bad way. But kids are great, they’re the most unconditional, forgiving people," she added.

Although it may seem rare for women above the age of 50 to give birth, the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention has revealed pregnancy for women between the ages of 50 and 54 have increased by more than 165% from 2000 to 2013.

Janet Jackson

In 2017, Janet Jackson welcomed her son, Eissa Al Mana, at 50 years old. The first time mom said becoming a parent has helped her to finally find "peace" in life.

"My son, even in his short 17 months on the planet, has showed me that love, no matter how deeply you believe you have experienced that emotion, can always go deeper," Jackson said in a recent interview with Billboard.

"Love is limitless. And for someone like me, raised in show business where self-concern is always a priority, how fortunate I am now to be concerned, first and foremost, with the welfare of someone else," Jackson said.

"Day after day and night after night, holding my baby in my arms, I am at peace. I am blessed. I feel bliss. In those moments, all is right with the world," she continued.

Sophie B. Hawkins

Sophie B. Hawkins is another mother who welcomed a child at 50 years old. In 2015, Hawkins gave birth to daughter Esther Ballantine Hawkins, who was born weighing a healthy eight pounds.

"Dashiell and I are ecstatic to finally be with our beautiful girl; our family is now complete!" the singer said in a statement.

Although Hawkins had used an embryo she had frozen in 1995, she was unsure if having another child later in life was the right decision for her family.

"I agonized over the decision for a year and a half, not because of my age, but because I am so happy, focused and ," Hawkins told unconnfertility.com.

"I went back and forth like a lawyer trying a case, sometimes as the prosecution, sometimes as the defense of the unborn child and sibling, and through it all one question emerged: Which will I regret, having another child or not having another?" the mother-of-two said.

Even her fertility doctor was skeptical about her decision at first, but after she realized Hawkins was in great health, she gave her the go ahead.

"I had, you know, spoken to a fertility doctor in New York and she said, 'You're old.' And I said, 'That's the point.' My son has an old mother. Why can't I give him somebody young to be his family for the rest of his life," the "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" singer told TODAY.

"She [Hawkins' doctor] said I'm the healthiest pregnant woman. I could've been 30 and had a lot more problems. At 50, I have no problems," she added.

Daljinder Kaur

After 46 years of trying for a child, Daljinder Kaur and her husband Mohinder Singh Gill made international headlines when they welcomed their son Armaan into the world at the respective ages of 72 and 80.

The elderly couple had undergone IVF treatments to conceive their son, after three attempts, Kaur became pregnant with her husband's sperm and a donor egg.

"When we saw the [IVF] advert, we thought we should also give it a try as I badly wanted to have a baby of my own," she said.

However, months after Kaur gave birth to her son, she revealed she had been struggling with motherhood.

"My blood pressure has suffered and I get tired very easily now. I’ve seen several doctors but they just give me medicines and a diet plan," Kaur said.

‘I’m worried for Armaan. I have to take care of my health but I have to care of Armaan too," she added. "Since he’s been crawling I’m on my hands and knees and it’s hard. My body can’t take it. It’s been harder than I thought."

While the parents are concerned about raising Armaan at an older age, they have never regretted their decision to have their child.

"No matter where I am he’ll come crawling to me," Kaur said. "I love him. He is a friendly child and smiles at everyone."

“People say, what will happen to the child once we die. But I have full faith in God. God is omnipotent and omnipresent, he will take care of everything," Gill added.
