A New TV Documentary Will Shed Light On The Menéndez Brothers' Case

This year's hottest TV trend was revisiting some of the most shocking court cases of the 1990s. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won 9 Emmy Awards, and CBS's documentary The Case Of: Jon Benét Ramsey made headlines for its controversial examination of the child pageant star's death.

Next month, a new two hour TV special will revisit the original "trial of the century," the homicide trial of the Menéndez brothers, Erik and Lyle, who were found guilty of murdering their wealthy parents Jose and Kitty Menéndez in their Beverly Hills home.

The brothers' shocking murder and their wealthy lifestyle (as the children of film producer Jose) intrigued people across America, and their 1993 court case was one of the first major cases broadcast nationally on Court TV. After 23 years, new details are still emerging about the circumstances surrounding their crimes, and this new documentary will examine them in detail.

The documentary Truth and Lies: The Menéndez Brothers - American Sons, American Murderers, will feature never before seen home movies, interviews with the Menéndezs' inner circle, and even feature conversations with Lyle and Eric themselves, who are currently serving life sentences.

This isn't the first time the drama and tragedy of the Menéndez family has been featured on screen, the 1994 TV movie Menéndez: A Killing in Beverly Hills starred Edward James Olmos as the brothers' father Jose.

The documentary will air on ABC on January 5th.
