'The Jetsons' Are Returning To TV In A Brand New Series

ABC

We first met The Jetsons fifty-five-years-ago when it premiered on ABC. Their futuristic world made us all dream about the potential of flying cars and robot maids.

ABC

The original series took place in 2062, which doesn't sound as far away as it used to. We are apparently only 45 years out from flying cars. I'm not going to hold my breath...

ABC

The show followed George Jetson and his family as they dealt with their regular family life in the year 2062.  A lot of the situations they encountered were still familiar to us, they just had cooler cars and gadgets. George was the patriarch to his space family the best he could and we loved to watch it.

ABC

There was his wife, Jane, whom he loved very much

ABC

His 16-year-old daughter, Judy, who was a bit of a handful

ABC

His 6-year-old son, Elroy, who was doing his best

ABC

Their dog, Astro, who was perfect because all dogs are perfect

ABC

And their household robot, Rosie, who did most of the work around the house and was pretty awesome

ABC

The show first aired between 1962-1963 and then was revived for a second and third season between 1985-1987. Now 30 years later, The Jetsons are coming back.

The Jetsons are coming back to television, but this time it will be different. They have left behind their cartoon forms and will be made into a live action show that is being produced by Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis.

ABC

The show has a a lot of confidence behind it. ABC has committed to the pilot, which means that if they don't pick up the series the network will be penalized financially.

Zemeckis plans to make the show like a traditional sitcom. It will be shot with multiple cameras, which is how a lot of sitcoms used to get made, but now many have been switching to single camera. Shows like Will & Grace and Friends were multi-camera shows where Modern Family is a single camera.

ABC

The plot is still going to be set "100 years in the future", so it will take place in 2118 or 2119 depending on when the show premiers. Deadline says that it "looks at America's favorite future family through a modern filter."

ABC

This isn't the only reboot planned for TV this year, NBC will be redoing The Munsters and Miami Vice, while the CW takes on Charmed. The new version of The Jetsons will be written by Gary Janetti who has written for a lot of TV classics including Will & Grace.
