Get Ready 90s Kids, Your Favorite Purple Dragon Is Making A Comeback
If you grew up playing video games in the late 90s, chances are that once the console wars between the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis came to a close, you fell into one of two completely different teams: Team Nintendo 64, or Team PlayStation.
For my money, the original PlayStation was basically the best system money could buy. Not only did it beat the Nintendo 64 to the market by a full year, but the fact that it used discs (which were cheaper to make) meant that EVERY major video game company wanted their games on there.
Sure, we might've missed out on stuff made by Nintendo themselves like Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 007, but man did we ever get a massive library of great stuff in exchange.
Whether it was breaking boxes in Crash Bandicoot, exploring massive worlds in the Final Fantasy games, sneaking around enemies to stop nuclear weapons in Metal Gear Solid, or even racing in the most realistic cars ever rendered in Gran Turismo, there was something about the PS1 that everyone could get into.
While most of these franchises have continued on to this day, one that's been noticeably absent is Spyro the Dragon, a series of games about a cute little purple dragon with attitude, who had to fly around, collect gems, and battle the forces of evil.
Spyro was originally created by Insomniac Games, who would go on to make the Ratchet and Clank and Resistance series for Sony. While Activision bought the license and kept making games from it for a while, Spyro himself eventually faded from the spotlight, and instead became the mascot for the Skylanders franchise, which were games basically designed just to sell toys.
We've missed Spyro all these years, but it looks like he's due for a comeback! That's right, the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy is being brought back for modern consoles!
Fresh off the success of Activision's revival of the Crash Bandicoot series, a new report mentions that the studio plans to release a remake of the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy, which includes the games Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
The collection promises to be a complete remake of the original games from the ground up, with new graphics and art design, re-recorded dialogue, and lots of new additions and extras (much like the Crash Bandicoot collection that was released in 2017).
While Activision has yet to confirm this announcement, the report is fairly detailed, and given how the rumors about the Crash Bandicoot collection turned out to be true, it wouldn't be surprising to see this come out as well. It is reportedly due out on the PlayStation 4 this year, and will be coming to other platforms after a year of limited exclusivity.
