Leak From Nintendo Reveals An N64 Classic Edition Could Be On The Way

Nintendo

If you played video games in the 90s, there's a very good chance that you were all about the Nintendo 64. One of the first game consoles to boast true 3D graphics (alongside the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn), it changed the way a lot of us looked at video games in general.

Nintendo

Suddenly, the worlds we explored felt so much bigger and REAL thanks to the openness of 3D games, and games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie dominated all of our free time. Not only that, but thanks to its ability to have 4 controllers hooked up at once, you and three of your friends could spend hours of free time taking each other on in games like Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye 007. We still love most of these to this day!

Still, these things sometimes age beyond repair. Controllers break, the save batteries in your cartridges die out, and the picture looks worse and worse when hooked up to modern TVs via those old AV cables.

Nintendo's earned a considerable amount of money and attention via their "Classic Edition" line of consoles over the last few years. The NES Classic Edition sold millions of units back in 2016, and the recently announced SNES Classic Edition has tons of people excited (and annoyed at how scarce they probably will be). So, naturally, fans of the N64 have been asking if that'll be getting a Classic Edition, and if so, when?

Nintendo

Well, Nintendo might have just had a leak that confirms its existence.

Rosti, a poster on video game message board NeoGAF (often the source for major leaks in the industry), posted that Nintendo had filed a trademark in Europe for four images. Three of them were instantly familiar to Nintendo fans: one was for the Nintendo Switch's logo, while the other two were for the NES and SNES controller logos that adorn the boxes for their respective Classic Editions

The last image though, was something different. Yes, it's an image of the instantly-recognizable Nintendo 64 controller! Done in the same style used to represent the controllers on the previous Classic Editions!

This is just a rumor for now (gaming website Polygon reached out to Nintendo for comment and got none), but we'll be sure to post about it if any new developments come out about an N64 Classic Edition. We're obviously very excited about the possibility of one, as who doesn't want to play Paper Mario on their big TV?
