John Goodman Opens Up About 'Roseanne' Controversy, Gives More Details About Spin-Off

ABC

The Roseanne reboot was one of those things that people were nervous about, but when it actually started airing, people seemed to love it.

That was until Roseanne Barr tweeted offensive messages and got the show canceled. People were disappointed about the cancellation, but ABC quickly found a way to remedy the situation.

After buying out Barr's rights to the show, they were able to create a new spin-off called The Conners, which features all of the cast from Roseanne, except for Barr herself.

So now that everyone will be back starting on October 16th, people have started trying to figure out what the plan is for removing the matriarch of the family from the storylines.

The original tagline for the show mentions "a sudden turn of events" but we had no clue what that meant. I mean, we all had our suspicions that Roseanne Conner would be killed off, but it's good to know for sure.

John Goodman, AKA Dan Conner, has opened up about his shock and surprise with the cancellation of Roseanne. Not only did he talk about his feelings on the treatment of Barr, but he gave us a little hint as to what the show will be doing in the fall.

The actor revealed that he was "broken-hearted" by the cancellation when he found out about it.

"I was broken-hearted, but I thought, OK, it's just show business, I'm going to let it go," Goodman said. "But I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed. I'm a depressive anyway, so any excuse that I can get to lower myself, I will. But that had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit."

Goodman kept quiet after all the drama with Barr went down, even though many of his fellow castmates released statements.

As for what's going to happen to Dan, Goodman seemed to officially confirm that Roseanne will be killed off the show.

When asked if he knows the storyline for Dan in the coming season, he explained that much of it is still unknown, but that there will be a tonal shift.

"I guess he'll be mopey and sad because his wife's dead."

He didn't explain how Roseanne would die, but fans wonder if they will use the prescription drug addiction that was featured in the last season to wrap up her story.

Even after the character is gone, there's a good chance that the plot will focus on how the family is handling the death. Given the fact that these characters had such a tight bond for all this time, it makes sense that they will all be greatly affected by the sudden loss.

The Conners will premiere at 8 pm on October 16th, so we've still got a ways to go before we find out.
