Christina Aguilera was one of the queens of the 90s. Her self-titled debut album came out just before the 90s ended, but we had already known her for years because of her appearance in The Mickey Mouse Club.
She had this huge powerhouse voice that none of us really understand how it came out of such a tiny little human, but somehow it worked.
She released her first single in 1999 and quickly became one of the top pop stars in world. They were constantly pitting her against Britney Spears and trying to see who would come out on top, but honestly, why couldn't we just love them both?
Christina had a lot of iconic moments in her career, moments that people are still talking about to this day. But since 2008 she's stepped off the stage and focused on being a mom.
She was a judge on The Voice several times, but that was because it was easier to do with her children.
But now, 10 years after her last tour, Christina is back in full force, with a new album, a new tour, and a new motivation for her music.
She opened up about what it's like to be back, and also what her time off is like now that she's a mom.
Kids Come First
She's spent 10 years now patiently waiting to record new music because her kids are her priority. She didn't want to focus on herself or disturb their lives.
"Touring is so frightening to me, because I am a mom first. It’s part of why I stayed in the position I was [at The Voice]. It’s easy to get comfortable and cushy in the same place and not have to worry about uprooting your kids. I’ve been putting myself on the back burner.”
But now that they are a little bit older she's excited to show them this part of her life.
"It needs to happen. I’m looking forward to getting back out and actually showing my kids what Mommy really does!”
Album drops June 15th
Her new album is called Liberation and it comes out on June 15th. The tour will start at the end of September and goes all over the country.
'The Voice' Wasn't The Dream Job She Hoped
She spent a good chunk of time on The Voice, but she's admitted that it wasn't always a positive experience. While she enjoyed the fact that she could keep her kids in their home and their schools, there were some things that were hard on her.
“It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one. You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story. I didn’t get into this business to be a television show host and to be given all these [rules].
There were a lot of restrictions that she was not a fan of as well.
“Especially as a female: You can’t wear this, can’t say that. I would find myself on that show desperately trying to express myself through clothing or makeup or hair. It was my only kind of outlet.”
She felt trapped in the show, and needed to cope in ways you may not expect for a "pop princess."
“I was longing for freedom. [Arriving home after filming] I would just take everything off -- the makeup, all of it -- and would blast hip-hop, or Nirvana, ‘Creep,’ Slayer. Anything like that to get me out of that zone, that TV mode.”
But now she's back where she belongs
Christina has one of the biggest voices in the biz. She's a powerhouse with an insane range that honestly is basically inhuman. Like, a human shouldn't be able to make those noises right? It's insane and incredible.
I've missed her, but she's ready to get back on stage.
“When I’m onstage, there’s not a bigger high, when I’m in connection with my voice and my heart and my soul. But at the end [of a performance], I want to wipe it all off, get in my sweatpants, make silly noises with my kids and have someone comfort and cuddle me.”
What she thinks about her old style
She was classified as a pop princess back in the 90s, but she's evolved a lot over the years and has really found that what inspires her has a little bit more soul to it.
“At the end of the day, I am a soul singer. When you strip back the words ‘pop star’ and the many things that I’ve done, singing soulfully is where my core, my root and my heart really is. And as you can see, it’s what I’m inspired by.”
She felt pressured to fit into a certain mold
They wanted her to to be another Britney, but she admits that it was a lot of pressure.
"I felt super label-driven and confined [being] commercially successful. And as great as it looks on the outside, I’m such a truth girl that if I’m not happy with something, I just can’t do it anymore.”
I don't know about you, but I'm glad she's finally broken free of all the standards of other people and is ready to make her big comeback.
Will you be checking out her new album or her tour?
All of our favorite pop stars have changed a lot since we were young. Some of them are completely unrecognizable.
They all used to make some real interesting fashion choices, but that's why we loved them, right?
