Gremlins 3 Writer Lets Us Know The "Twisted and Dark" Plans For New Movie

Warner Bros.

Hollywood isn't going to stop making sequels and reboots, that much is clear. No matter how much we keep telling them that they should make new movies, they insist on revisiting past hits. This time, it's Gremlins.

Warner Bros.

Gremlins 3 is currently in production by Chris Columbus, creator of the original movie. So it isn't like the new movie will be a big, new reboot, but people did have some concerns.

Columbus is actually writing the script as well, which means that he will have more control than the previous sequel. Gremlins 2: The New Batch didn't involve creator Chris Columbus at all, and he has been very honest in saying that he didn't enjoy it very much.

For the third installment, he has taken over and written the script himself. He let us know what he's been working on.

Columbus said, "I'm really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a budgetary conversation when we're going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

He also explained what we expect now that CGI is more readily available than it used to be, as well as the potential fate of a fan-favorite character.

The Mogwai are certainly a unique bunch, but none are quite as special as Gizmo. The little gremlin managed to work his way into our hearts even though he may or may not cause more harm than good. When asked why none of the characters have thought that it would be wise to kill off Gizmo, Columbus agreed.

He said, "Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly. I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying."

Does this mean we are going to see Gizmo dead? That seems unlikely, but you never know! Another thing people were worried about was the potential for CGI. The previous movies were made with puppets, but now that CGI is a lot more popular there was some concern that the puppets would be left in the past.

Warner Bros.

Columbus addressed this concern by saying, "Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it's all puppets."

Who knows if the movie will ever actually come to fruition, but if so at least it's back in the hands of the originator!
