7 Famous Car Chases That Will Rev Your Engines

For decades now, we've loved watching movies that feature cars going fast enough to do something stupid in. Whether it's the highlight of a movie like The French Connection, or the foundation of an entire franchise like The Fast and The Furious, we just can't get enough.

Bleeding Cool

With the release of Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, the newest movie to enter into this awesome genre, we decided to highlight our personal favorite moments of fast action and even faster cars.

1) Ronin (1998)

Joblo

When you have an action movie directed by a former amateur race car driver (John Frankenheimer), chances are you're in for some pretty great car chases. Ronin's chase through the streets of Paris is the stuff of film legend, often dropping out the music to let the roar of the engines act as the chase's entire soundtrack.

2) The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

One of the more realistic chases in film history, this one's less about speed and more about just how much punishment Jason Bourne and his car can take before giving in. You practically FEEL every hit that lands on his beat-up cab.

3) Vanishing Point (1971)

Movie Poster Warehouse

A car chase classic from the genre's heyday, Vanishing Point features intense driving and a white Dodge Challenger so iconic that Quentin Tarantino would use it for his own awesome car chase movie, Death Proof.

4) The Blues Brothers (1980)

Going more for comedy than tension, the boys in black have to escape from a number of cop cars that borders on ridiculous. The chase is still surprisingly satisfying, especially the giant pileup at the end.

5) The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

IMP Awards

Way more over the top than the previous ones listed (thanks to some generous CG, slow-motion effects, and lots of guns), the Highway Chase sequence is easily a highlight of the movie. Juno Reactor's thumping score makes it all the better.

6) Bullitt (1968)

Fiskens

The original classic and definitive name in car chase movies, Steve McQueen pilots his iconic Ford Mustang GT through the streets of San Francisco at top speed, all while looking cool doing it. It still holds up great even after almost 50 years.

7) Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Flickering Myth

What happens when you make an entire movie out of a single, drawn-out car chase? You get one of the best blockbuster action movies in recent memory, that's what. Fury Road is relentless in its pace, giving you only a few moments to catch your breath before the chase is on again. Best of all, it shows there's still room in Hollywood for awesome chases.
